The Procedure

Fulfill Your Graduation Requirement

Finding a job or internship that will fulfill your Professional Experience requirement can seem like a daunting task, but don't worry. We've broken this process down into several steps that build upon each other, so when it comes time to sit down for an interview with your prospective employer, you'll be ready.

Step 1: Attend a Student Information Session (Freshman/Sophomore)

How to do it (complete one of the following):

  • Attend a group information session, offered several times throughout the semester. See our Professional Experience Events page for specific dates, times, and locations.
  • Stop by the Professional Experience Coordinator's office (Kepner 1090B) during scheduled drop-in hours, from 9-11 am on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-3pm. Drop-in appointments are 15 minutes.
  • Schedule a half hour meeting with the Professional Experience Coordinator by contacting Amy Pittington at 970-351-2088.

When to do it:  This step should be completed freshman or sophomore year or upon transferring to the Monfort College of Business.

Why:  To learn about the Professional Experience process (and graduation requirement), expectations, and to get questions answered.

Step 2: Complete Prerequisite Workshops (Sophomore/Junior)

You must attend the following prerequisite workshops before you may move forward through the Professional Experience process:

  • Resume Workshop
  • Professionalism/Interviewing Workshop

How to do it:  These workshops are held multiple times throughout the semester. Visit our Professional Experience Events page for specific dates, times, and locations.

When to do it:  This step should be completed sophomore or junior year (before finding a Professional Experience).

Why:  Create a professional resume and be prepared for interviews.

Step 3: Apply to the Professional Experience Program

How to do it:

  1. Download the Student Application Form (download the file).
  2. Complete the form, either manually or electronically (it is a "fillable" Word document, meaning it can be typed in and saved).
  3. Email the form to the Professional Experience team at Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu, or drop form off to Amy Pittington in Kepner 1090 in a sealed envelope with a company logo in return address space.

When to do it:  This step should be completed after attending the two required pre-requisite workshops and before you begin looking for your Professional Experience. You should feel confident with your chosen business area of emphasis, and have a general idea of the career path you'd like to take.

Why:  Confirm workshops have been completed and ensure student is in good standing with the university.

Step 4: Find your Professional Experience (Junior/Senior)

How to do it (a few suggestions/tips):

  • Utilize Bears Career Connection, an online portal allowing students to create a profile, search qualified jobs, apply, and sign up for interviews.
  • Attend the annual Networking Night, required for all MCB juniors and seniors, where you can interact directly with potential employers.
  • Visit the UNC Career Services center, which offers many career-related resources and connections.
  • Utilize your current network.

When to do it:  This step should be completed after acquiring a minimum of 60 credits (junior or senior year)

Why:

  • Completing your Professional Experience your junior or senior year will enable you to directly apply the knowledge learned in your upper-division courses.
  • Today’s employers are looking for students who have gained work experience in their area of interest while completing their undergraduate studies.

Step 5: Complete a Student-Employer Agreement

How to do it: 

  1. Download the Student-Employer Professional Experience Agreement (download the file).
  2. Work with your employer to complete the form, either manually or electronically (it is a "fillable" Word document, meaning it can be typed in and saved).
  3. Email the form to the Professional Experience team at Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu, or drop form off to Amy Pittington in Kepner 1090.

When to do it:  Immediately upon finding your Professional Experience employer.

Why: 

  • Ensures that employer is aware student is using experience to fulfill a graduation requirement.
  • Ensures employer is aware of evaluations that need to be completed.
  • Encourages employer to visit Professional Experience website to learn more about program and to contact Professional Experience Coordinator with any questions or concerns.

Step 6: Have your supervisor complete a mid-term evaluation

How to do it: 

  1. Direct your employer to this page, where they should download the mid-term evaluation form (download the file).
  2. Complete the form, either manually or electronically (it is a "fillable" Word document, meaning it can be typed in and saved).
  3. Email the form to the Professional Experience team at Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu, or drop form off to Amy Pittington in Kepner 1090.

When to do it:  Half-way through the Professional Experience (it is up to each student to track the half-way point and make sure a mid-term evaluation was submitted by the site supervisor and received by the Professional Experience Coordinator)

Why: 

  • Checking in with the employer to make sure student is fulfilling Professional Experience requirement
  • Gives the employer an opportunity to provide feedback both to the student and to the Professional Experience Coordinator.

Step 7: Have your supervisor complete a final evaluation

How to do it: 

  1. Direct your employer to this page, where they should download the final evaluation form (download the file).
  2. Complete the form, either manually or electronically (it is a "fillable" Word document, meaning it can be typed in and saved).
  3. Email the form to the Professional Experience team at Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu, or drop form off to Amy Pittington in Kepner 1090.

When to do it:  Near the completion of the Professional Experience (before leaving the organization completing experience at)

Why: 

  • Ensures student continued and completed Professional Experience
  • Another opportunity for feedback from the employer (both on the student and regarding the Professional Experience Program as a whole) and to reflect upon mid-term evaluation

Step 8: Complete a brief Final Reflection

How to do it: 

  1. Download the Student Final Reflection Form (download the file).
  2. Complete the form, either manually or electronically (it is a "fillable" Word document, meaning it can be typed in and saved).
  3. Email the form to the Professional Experience team at Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu, or drop form off to Amy Pittington in Kepner 1090.

When to do it:  Immediately upon completing Professional Experience and leaving organization/Professional Experience site

Why:  Determine what and how skills learned in upper-division MCB classes are being applied to the professional world of work

Step 9: Register for BA299

BA299 is a...

  • non-credit, satisfactory/unsatisfactory course
  • completion of program required to graduate from Monfort College of Business
  • must have instructor approval to register

How to do it:  Send an email to Cassandra.Shearholdt@unco.edu requesting an override into the course (upon verification, student will receive an email with CRN number and will be able to register)

When to do it:  Semester student will complete Professional Experience or the semester after Professional Experience is completed (only register for BA 299 one time)

Why registering at this time:

  • A final grade of satisfactory/unsatisfactory cannot be given until student has completed the Professional Experience Program and all required forms are turned in and documented
  • The entire Professional Experience process will occur over several years and semesters and progress will be tracked internally at MCB by the Professional Experience Coordinator

Why:  Receive acknowledgement for completing the Professional Experience Program at MCB and complete a graduation requirement
