Kristi Meyer was a MCB student who studied abroad in Germany.
I chose to study abroad because three of my Cousins did it when I was little and after hearing all of their amazing stories I knew I had to do the same thing. My family is also really into traveling so I wanted to continue experiencing other countries and cultures. I chose Furtwangen because Joe at the Center for International education suggested it and I'm glad he did because I was originally dead set on going to Australia, but I later learned that Germany was so much cooler because it's located in Central Europe which gave me the opportunity to see over eight other countries in my five month stay there.
What did you learn from this experience?
I gained more than I can say through this experience. I've been back for over a year now and I still have flashbacks about all my unique cultural and educational experiences. I also gained a sense of independence. I was literally living by myself in my own apartment. I had to cook, pay bills and do everything by myself! At first it was scary, but I learned that it has made me more responsible when I got back to the U.S.
What is your favorite memory from your time spent studying abroad?
My most memorable experience was the connections I made with all of the international students, we were always together and we went out all the time for dinners, concerts, etc.. I also loved that I was able to travel. I was able to meet people through my university from surrounding countries who allowed me to go visit their home countries and stay with their families and experience their culture and lifestyles! It was an incredible experience that I would never have been given the opportunity to do so if I had not studied abroad.
Any advice for students considering studying abroad?
I don't think words can express how much I would encourage every student at MCB and UNC to study abroad. It truly has put me above all of my other peers when it comes to being unique and learning things you can't possibly learn in a classroom setting. I know that when looking at graduating and interviewing for potential jobs I will have the one up on my peers because I've taken the time to study abroad. It's affordable it UNC and it's something everyone needs to do. I loved every minute of it!
